the Alexandria anomaly

March 20, 2011

Against the nationwide landslide for “yes,” Alexandria is proving to be the sole anomaly so far. Two-thirds of the votes have been counted there, and it’s over 60% “no” in Alex.

The strange thing here is that many portrayed a “yes” vote as advantageous to the Brotherhood, but Alexandria has long been a Brotherhood stronghold, and they campaigned vigorously there for a “yes” vote.

So far at least, I’m not hearing angry claims of fraud. Landslide elections in Egypt have often been an alarming sign rather than one of a truly unified populace, but (at least to this point) I’m not hearing calls to go on the street and protest the referendum as rigged.
