U.S. freezes $31.5 billion in Mubarak wealth

March 17, 2011

HERE.

Initially the U.S. government had said that the rumors of $71 billion in Mubarak wealth were false, and that it was probably more like $2 billion or $3 billion. But now much more than that has been found in the U.S. alone, and I doubt he would have stashed it all in one country.

The situation continues to darken for the ex-President. He can blame his own stubbornness. He might have been able to step down unharassed on January 28, let alone some years ago as many wished him to do.

[ADDENDUM: Big mistake here. The story was based on a statement by John Kerry, and now it turns out he “misspoke”: the wealth frozen was Qaddafi’s, not Mubarak’s!]
