“how close we came to WWIII”

In another article I just saw this alarming remark about the Israeli airstrike against Syria in September 2007:

“If people had known how close we came to world war three that day there’d have been mass panic. Never mind the floods or foot-and-mouth — Gordon really would have been dealing with the bloody Book of Revelation and Armageddon.”

Sometimes people just talk like this, but assuming this source knew what he was talking about, how could it have been WWIII? Well, it had something to do with North Korea’s apparent role in the incident. If you enjoy doomsday tales, that article is a good one for you.
