UN Security Council’s sanctions and asset freezes
February 27, 2011
I’m warming to THIS.
My previous concern was the futility of it, given that the situation is likely to be over before sanctions have an effect. However, it helps pave the way for stronger action later against any regime figures who survive their current predicament, and it’s also a nice “bonding experience” for Security Council members to agree unanimously on the intolerability of Qaddafi.
Incidentally, as angry as everyone I know is about Libya, the Egyptians I know are even angrier. It’s not only their western neighbor, but maybe Egyptians work there and have been endangered. And not only that, but the Egyptians are in an even stronger human rights mood than usual.
