more ugliness in Tunis?
February 27, 2011
This surprises me, and I sometimes worry about Egypt if things don’t move quickly enough:
1225: The BBC’s Paul Moss in the Tunisian capital Tunis says there are “very ugly scenes” taking place there. Protesters are being subjected to “merciless” beatings from police and plain clothes thugs. He saw one man beaten unconscious before being dragged away by police.
It’s not impossible that we’ll see two-stage or even three-stage revolutions in these countries.
Stage 1: Leader forced out of power. People calm down.
Stage 2: Military takeover leads to inadequate change. People protest again, are dealt with violently. And then… ?
Stage 3: Lower classes in these countries still feel short-changed by the revolution(s), demand more serious change.
