Egypt’s proposed Constitutional amendments
February 24, 2011
These look good to me, though some people wanted even more changes (especially the existing article saying that Egyptian law is based on Sharia law, though in practice Egyptian law seems far milder in many respects; people often assume that criminals have their hands chopped off here, things like that, which is simply not the case, and there are on average only 2 executions per year carried out in Egypt– a brisk single afternoon in Texas).
HERE.
The obvious highlight is the limit of two four-year terms for the President, as opposed to an infinite number of six-year terms.
Treaties must now be approved by Parliament.
Constitutional amendments must be proposed by “the people,” which I suppose means Parliament.
Parliament will no longer be able to rule one of its own members invalid. Only the courts will be able to do this. (A measure against the sort of majority-party tyranny Egypt has seen too much of.)
