Libyan diplomat in China now resigns

February 21, 2011

With appropriately harsh language:

“A Libyan diplomat in China, Hussein el-Sadek el-Mesrati, told Al-Jazeera, ‘I resigned from representing the government of Mussolini and Hitler.'”

There must be no comparable phenomenon in modern history: diplomats resigning en masse from service to a country which is still led by the very ruler who hired them. I can’t imagine what other circumstances might have prompted such a thing.

As a thought experiment and analogy, what would it take for most of the U.S. diplomatic corps to resign en masse? The first thing I could think of would be an unprovoked Blitzkrieg into Canada. That’s sort of the level of barbarity Qaddafi occupies now.
