from al-Ahram Weekly

February 18, 2011

Tonight I happened across a copy of yesterday’s al-Ahram Weekly, an English language publication that over the years was quite a bit more free in its editorial policy than the normal Arabic al-Ahram.

It looks like an issue worth buying and keeping, simply because of what happened during the week in question. It was laying it on a bit thick in its flattery of the army, however. For that reason I’m not sure whether to trust the following two points I read, which are interesting nonetheless:

*the claim that the army has arrested 77 suspected camel-and-horse Tahrir thugs and promises to put them on trial.

*the claim in one passage (contradicted elsewhere in the paper by statements to the contrary) that the current Cabinet will be dismissed “within days.” The other passages all made it sound like the current team will be in place until elections occur.
