all good news
February 14, 2011
If you’ve been at all worried about the status of the Egyptian revolution, try THIS NY TIMES ARTICLE on the situation, with its litany of good news from today. You could hardly have written a more promising fictional article at this point in time.
The army will of course have some vested interests to defend, some of them business interests. But from this article there is a sense that they may be getting it, and realizing that the Egyptian public really does want a bona fide democracy, and will continue to protest if they don’t get one.
I wish that I had started keeping a graph when this all started, charting the rise and fall of my optimism from January 25 onward. For me as for others there have been huge swings every couple of days. This article marks one of the biggest optimism upticks for me.
[ADDENDUM: The story has since been tweaked a bit, and isn’t quite as unreservedly positive as it was. That’s the danger of linking to stories without spelling out the details.]
