Tantawi
February 12, 2011
I just saw Field Marshal Tantawi described as “one of the least charismatic figures in the Middle East.” Quite a line, but it points to the reason why I’m not so worried about the current military role. There just don’t seem to be any Napoleons in the group; they were systematically eliminated over the years as threats. What you have instead is a bunch of old guys who mostly want to make sure they don’t lose all their privileges. There may be some friction over that, but I don’t foresee the Egyptian army trying any monkey business. I hope I’m right about that. The Egyptians I know don’t seem worried. Even the Muslim Brotherhood doesn’t sound worried.
