discrepancies
February 6, 2011
Cocnerning the Achcar and Amar articles linked to on this blog earlier, one of the interesting things is the discrepancies between them, which goes to show how hard it is to read some of these things. Here’s just one example…
For Achcar, Egypt is a thoroughly military dictatorship in which even the top civilian figures are military men wearing civilian costumes.
For Amar, by contrast, the military in Egypt is an institution of declining social prestige, recently eclipsed by the glamor of international crony capitalists, and ready to lash out in resentment against those crony capitalists as soon as possible.
I’m not even sure which is correct, if either.
