from Larnaka

January 3, 2011

In a sense, the photo fails to convey my intended point, which is how hard it’s raining in Cyprus today.

But this is also an interesting image, if a visually confusing one. I’m inside of a chain coffee house along the “strip,” or whatever they call it in Larnaka, which is a major resort city when the weather is good. The Mediterranean is merely a long baseball throw from here.

That tent-like thing you see is actually outside. All the businesses here on the strip have those outdoor covered annexes.

The restaurant situation for lunch, I must say, is pretty disappointing down here. Nothing even remotely local. It’s all Pizza Hut, KFC, TGI Friday’s, etc.

I have a night flight to Cairo, and so decided to spend the whole day in Larnaka– failing to anticipate that it would be pouring rain all day, and failing to realize as well that the Larnaka Airport has no left luggage window or luggage lockers. There’s apparently one hotel down here that will keep your luggage all day for a fee, but they’re closed for the season. So, I’m reduced to wheeling my suitcase in the rain between a series of chain businesses.

But in all fairness, it looks like the seaside would be gorgeous on any normal day, even in winter.
