coffee shops: it’s that way in the North too

December 30, 2010

Cengiz read my report from last night about chain coffee shops in the South of Cyprus: the fact that they are bar-like dating scenes and fashion shows in a way I’ve never seen anywhere else. And now Cengiz assures me that the same is true of Northern Cyprus as well.

It’s quite remarkable, actually. Out here where I am, it’s a whole strip of them, and they’re all like that… Large and airy, apparently designed by real architects who put some thought into the job, and very much like a bar pickup scene, dominated by youngish adults. More strangely still, I went to one today at around noon, and it already had that sort of atmosphere; it’s not just a night thing.
