lunch

Lunch at Estoril with two artists from London. It turns out we have mutual friends both in London and in India.
The “small world” phenomenon only increases as you get older; I’ve referred to a few startling past cases on this blog. The reasons why this might tend to happen to an increasing degree are obvious enough that it feels tedious to mention at the moment (though I do think its an interesting topic).
But Schopenhauer makes an interesting related remark somewhere. He says that one of the distinguishing features of youth is that you have a lot in common with everyone in your age group, but that the points in common narrow increasingly as time goes by.
Oddly enough, that movement can also reverse at times. It looks as though in July I’ll be going to one of my high school reunions for the first time ever, and in that case the commonalities I have with these people will all come roaring back, though our current lives bear not the slightest resemblance in most cases.
