very close to publication

December 21, 2010

We the editors have now seen the cover of The Speculative Turn, which means that publication of the volume is imminent.

I can say this much: the color is generally black, and nothing beats a black book cover for aesthetic impressiveness. I begged for Tool-Being to have a black cover, not realizing that the whole Open Court continental philosophy series is supposed to be dark forest green. But I like those first two covers anyway.

This book will be a valuable collection right now, and an increasingly interesting snapshot of 2010 over the next 20 or 30 years.

The collection also has great national and generational diversity. Unfortunately, it admittedly has horrible gender diversity (Isabelle Stengers is the only woman in the collection). To that my only answer is: we tried to do better. The invitation list and the contributors list do not entirely overlap. Sometimes people are just too busy, which of course is as good a sign for them as it was unlucky for us.

There are actually quite a number of people missing from the collection who would have been good to include. But the selection list dates to a couple of years ago, and things move quickly in our subfield.

In any case, I think we’re all ready to get it into circulation and let the conversations begin. And it was a pleasure to meet Levi and Nick through this project; I’m a minor appendage compared with their long-term efforts.
