I’ve mentioned Fred Phelps a few times before, and how he must be the most universally hated person in America.

But Graeme Wood points out a strange side to Phelps and his Westboro Baptist Church, which is that they are vehemently anti-racist. Phelps was even a civil rights attorney helping to integrate Topeka after the famous Brown Supreme Court case. It’s a strange mixture of elements.
