It would be a great historic irony if education funding cuts reach the point where only “useful” disciplines are allowed to flourish in universities, given the opposite situation that prevailed for many centuries. Eventually the humanities would probably find some other niche in which to survive in the world, just as the useful disciplines did during their long period of snobbish exclusion from the Academy. But it means a very tough road for those living in the transition time.
