John Coltrane, “Satellite”
November 30, 2010
I’ve recommended this song before, and now it’s on YouTube (though without moving video; a growing trend I don’t really understand).
Too bad not to see Trane in action on this one. It’s not his most celebrated song, but for the past few years it’s been my favorite. It’s a really weirded-out version of “How High the Moon”, barely recognizable as such, but a textbook example of how to transform a song utterly into something even better, a lesson instinctively grasped by many electronic d.j.’s (the main reason I’m such a fan of electronic dance music, against all expectations).
Anyway, have fun with this one. It never gets old. (His version of “Summertime” isn’t bad either, though maybe just a touch too long.)
