Is it just me, or is Hawking’s new “theology is unnecessary” media blitz a complete waste of time?

1. Why is it supposed to be a shock whenever tough-minded scientist confronts gullible religious person? We have been at this game since the 18th century.

2. Basing one’s atheism on M-theory doesn’t seem very impressive, given that there isn’t a shred of evidence for the theory, or at present even any hope of such evidence. Weird move on Hawking’s part, but maybe the news stories are distorting his argument in some way.
