I’m digging China Miéville’s latest novel more with each chapter. If you’ve avoided his past novels because you “don’t like science fiction,” or something like that, you should try this one, which is more like “sociology fiction.” It’s a murder mystery set in a mind-blowing cultural situation that even involves fun bits of invented history by Miéville… At one point, for instance, he invents a supposed travel journal entry by Laurence Sterne about a culture that exists in the novel but not in our present world. The setting is a very creepy Eastern Europe pushed well beyond multi-ethnicity to something that will make you feel different the next time you walk out on the street.
