Poser as correlationist
August 20, 2010
A quick translation of my favorite part of Poser’s review:
“Philosophy according to Bogost, should provide the twenty-first century with a ‘new flavor of post-continental philosophy.’ One can sense the fascination simply from reading the abstracts of the day’s contributions on April 23. Young white American men surrender to the enjoyment of naming objects, using cheeky language, and enjoying themselves. Finally a kick in the shin for the old abstract philosophers! Typically American.
Is it a counter-project to idealism, 200 years after Fichte announced that the I produces the non-I, i.e. the world ? Or something like a new monism, that instead of announcing the solitary lordship of the spirit, turns everything into objects? We will have to wait and see what will come of this, but the philosophical problems are clear. How humans perceive things, and that we will never know how the things really are, Kant has already said everything on the subject.”
I certainly do like naming objects, using cheeky language, and enjoying myself. I’m also very much a young white American male, though I doubt the adjective “typical” does the job in my case. And I also doubt that “Kant has already said everything on the subject.” However, I still got a kick out of that article.
