the low-internet lifestyle
August 15, 2010
Incidentally, I thought this was clear from my previous post, but maybe not… There is of course no problem with Poland’s internet infrastructure. The cafe from which I make this post has a very high-speed and clear connection, and that’s been my experience throughout Poland as a whole.
The low-internet lifestyle in Warsaw to which I have referred is simply a result of staying at Marcin’s place, and he has made a conscious decision not to have internet access in his home. Hard to blame him… He has a rich intellectual life and a rich social life as well, and on top of that he plays chess and piano. He simply doesn’t see the point of spending any time surfing the net, and thus excludes this medium from his living quarters.
Marcin even made a good point last night at one of the parties, which is that he would rather read my books than my blog, so he never reads this blog. Hard to argue with him there. Last night he came as close as one can possibly come to talking me into not spending any more time on blog posts. But I think there’s still a niche this blog can fill in my mental life, and certainly some readers seem to profit from it in certain ways.
In any case, it’s been a great long weekend here in Warsaw among a very impressive group of intelligentsia. I’ll be back here soon enough for further visits.
The Polish translation of Prince of Networks is coming along well, though Marcin has had to stop for awhile to translate some more materials for Kronos, which is a fine-looking journal led by a remarkably brilliant team of editors. Something important could happen here.
