the repeated song
August 11, 2010
I’m not sure how usual or unusual this is, but maybe 3 or 4 times per year I fall into a zone in which I will listen to only one song on repeat for days at a time. I won’t say what the current song is, but except for one day when I diversified a bit it has been the only song playing in Paris: a few hundred times by now.
There are just certain times when one feels like the best the world has to offer, and everything else sounds like imitation music. I’m not sure what triggers these episodes or even how one rises above the others; all I know is that I find this happening once every few months, for days at a time. Then it ends and things go back to normal, apparently without reason.
But this reminds me of the terrible story of a woman somewhere in the Western USA who crashed her car off the side of a road and was suspended upside-down in the vehicle for a few days before anyone found her. Her car’s stereo was jammed by the accident so that one song replayed several thousand times days and night before she was rescued, and as I recall it literally almost drove her insane.
