the other Bruskin influence

August 11, 2010

There were a number of activities this morning, but let me focus for the moment on my return to the Bruskin tapestry/ies (it’s publicized in the singular, and all belong together, but there are 5 separate physical pieces side by side).

The joint Jewish/Soviet background of his work has been mentioned, and certainly both elements are there, and perfectly reflect the two sides of his personal background.

However, it seems to me that an even stronger forerunner is Egyptian art. As I sat there today, again alone for half an hour (in a city of otherwise sardine can museums at the moment) I felt like I was inside one of the tombs of Luxor, looking at hieroglyphs. I don’t know if that was on his mind at all, but that’s really what Bruskin reminds me of most.
