response to yesterday’s Raspberries post

I can well believe this:

“There is a weird axis of [academics] at my place that is so hip you want to vomit… One guy actually said that the warmth of one job candidate was why NOT to hire him.”

I’d only vaguely thought about it before, but I do think the obligatory hip/cool persona is in fact an excrescence of various modern philosophical presuppositions. A certain cynical detachment and distance and attitude of superiority toward the world is required in both cases (to be hip and to be a good modern philosopher).
