Lovecraft and New England
August 10, 2010
Jeremy Trombley SHARES SOME THOUGHTS on the matter.
I doubt I’ll be able to go this winter, but I would like to rent a car and drive through central Massachusetts, and only at night. That ought to give a Lovecraftian mood to whatever I write on Lovecraft.
And something else I don’t think I’ve said in awhile… Lovecraft’s story openings aren’t always good (I cringe every time at the first paragraph of “The Whisperer in Darkness,” since the 2nd paragraph would have been the perfect opening). But I do happen to think that the first couple of pages of “The Dunwich Horror” are just about the best English prose you’re ever going to see.
