one surprise about Heidegger translations

Every few years I find myself wondering why there hasn’t been an effort to retranslate On the Way to Language. Not that the current Harper paperback is any worse than any of the other early Heidegger translations (many are perfectly fine), but because it is not a complete version of the German Unterwegs zur Sprache. For example, it doesn’t contain “Die Sprache,” which is possibly the most important essay in the book.

What if the English version of Derrida’s Writing and Difference had omitted a couple of the key essays? Wouldn’t it be strange to let that situation continue for 40 years? It’s not as if the Heidegger industry in the USA is underdevelopoed or left shorthanded. There are dozens of qualified translators available.
