an advice post from Vitale

If you’re an upcoming college graduate with no idea what to do next year, here’s another piece to read. Over at Networkologies, Chris SHARES HIS OWN EXPERIENCE.
And I’m in agreement with his main suggestions.
1. It’s hard to believe now, but you won’t always have a life free of ties. So this is the time for you to travel. I’m serious about that. Now that I have a respectable salary for travel, I no longer have the time for it. I actually have to wonder things like “I want to go back to Malta, but there’s no possible time to do it until probably next January,” despite being in a profession known for its nice vacations (because I always have commitments of various sorts lined up well in advance). This is definitely good time to travel.
2. If you’re a native speaker of English, then you are lucky to live in the “English now functioning as the de facto new Latin” era. That won’t last forever either, but it’s still there right now, and that means you’re a marketable language teacher in all kind of interesting places– even if you have no teaching experience at all.
And as Chris adds, even if you’re an American college graduate with big loan debts, some of these jobs are in wealthy places with salaries that will enable you to pay down the loans while also adventuring a bit: Japan, the Persian Gulf. If you’re lucky to have no such debt, you can try some more unusual places.
