an odd facet of the United/Continental merger
May 4, 2010
This must have been done in other mergers in the past, but I can’t think of any other examples at the moment:
“The planes, and the airline, will carry the United name, but will feature Continental’s blue color scheme and globe logo on the tail.”
There’s a photo of the new design in the article.
It will feel a bit confusing. I try to imagine other possible cases… For example, Pepsi and Coke merge, and they keep the Coke name but put it on blue cans with the Pepsi logo.
Or let’s say the USA had decided to adopt the Confederate flag after the Civil War.
Or, a more recent example, the Bundesrepublik Deutschland had chosen the East German flag and anthem to replace its own.
But granted, Continental always had a nicer logo and color scheme than United anyway, so the planes will now be more attractive. And if they hadn’t done so already (I’ve been in Egypt for a decade) I hope United can now drop the ad nauseam use of Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” as its commercial soundtrack.
