more Agrippa

Expect a few more of these from me in coming days…

“For, as Pliny relates of a cuckoo, in what place any one doth first hear him, if his right foot-print be marked about and that place dug up, no fleas will be bred in that place where it is scattered.”

Giordano Bruno also has a wonderful treatise on magic, with its famous passage saying that sheep are terrified by the sound of drums made from wolf-skin.

But perhaps the best passage in Bruno’s work is when, classifying various types of demons, he mentions a kind that is “unable to distinguish the possible from the impossible.”
