not sure how we did it

February 25, 2010

That was weird… It only took an 1 hour and 45 minutes in the end.

I know it sounds like a long time (and it’s my personal record since moving back to Zamalek). But a normal Thursday night run to Zamalek would be around 1:10. Considering that we were bumper-to-bumper in a flood for what felt like a long time, that we stopped for awhile to change a flat tire, that we went out of our way to drop off a few people in an unusual neighborhood not normally on the route, and that my friend’s bus took nearly 3 hours to get downtown from campus, I’m really not sure how we pulled it off in just 1:45.

Still, it was bad enough. And the witty Egyptian student next to me agreed on the main point… The government here is making a smart decision by not investing in road drainage. It would be a major expense for infrastructure that would be used maybe only 5 or 6 times per decade. Better just to suffer on those rare occasions.
