a sample

Here’s possibly the most ridiculous sample from Fish’s July editorial:

“By definition, a culture other than yours is one that displays unfamiliar practices, enforces local protocols and insists on its own decorums. Some of them even have different languages and are unhappy if you don’t speak them. To me that all spells discomfort, and I don’t see why I should endure the indignities of airplane travel only to be made uncomfortable once I get where I’m going. As for seeing how other people live, that’s their business, not mine.”

I can’t smell any irony here, so I guess we must conclude that this is the genuine mentality of Stanley Fish. Good God.

What really appalled Lingis, though, is that about half of the commenters agreed with Fish! I’m normally extremely tolerant of most opinions about most things, but not in this particular case– or at least not from a high-level academic like Fish. I found the editorial disgusting.
