what I like best

January 8, 2010

What I like best are people who are not the stereotypical products of their time, place, and profession.

And this is why originality is important. One frequent critical response to this point is to say that “truth is more important than originality.” And this has the easy air of seriousness opposing frivolity. Yet it is based on the misconception that truth is a content that one can pick up and repeat and still be right. It even misinterprets originality as meaning “original content,” as if just to string together a few unprecedented propositions really got down to the origin of things.

What I like about original people is that in them, a genuine force of some sort is welling up and taking tangible shape. They aren’t just adopting a pre-existent argumentative niche and calling it true.
