things that disappeared
December 30, 2009
I was just looking at one of those lists of “12 things that disappeared during the past decade,” none of them horribly surprising, though I guess I hadn’t quite registered yet that fax machines are on their way out. They also said that “telephone calls” are disappearing in favor of texting, though I think that may be just a little bit premature.
But one that was both obvious and a bit surprising simultaneously was CD’s. I tried to remember when I last bought music in the form of a CD. There was one case a year ago where I did buy a boxed set plus a CD of Egyptian music. But otherwise, the last time I was going out and regularly buying music in the form of CD’s was probably around 2003.
I just thought of this because I caught myself stupidly thinking that I’d never again find that CD of Lauritz Melchior in Act I of Die Walküre, and then instantly discovered that it’s a $7.99 download on iTunes. He’s still the Heldentenor.
