lively discussion chez Bogost

December 9, 2009

IAN BOGOST TRIES A DEFINITION OF OOO FOR THE PUBLIC, and a lively discussion results. (It’s interesting that people are rarely outright jerks on Bogost’s blog. Or maybe he just censors those.)

I’ll stay out of that discussion for now because I want to see what people come up with.

However, one point is raised in the discussion that I’ve long found quite revealing… If you want to see a rather graphic depiction of the difference between OOO and other strands of Speculative Realism, the name “Bruno Latour” is a usefully polarizing one. In most cases those who regard themselves as firmly in the object-oriented camp will tend to be admirers of Latour, while those not in the camp will often unleash strings of invective against him (Nick Srnicek is the only clear exception who comes to mind of a Latour fan in our midst who is not especially an OOO fan). Clearly, Latour is standing pretty close to the fault line.
