Gate 7

Terminal 2 is my least favorite of the three Cairo Airport terminals. Terminal 1 used to be terrible when I first arrived in Egypt, but in the meantime it had a facelift so total that it now almost sparkles. And the brand new Terminal 3 is really nice. That leaves Terminal 2 as the bore of the group, and that’s where I’m stuck right now. Not too much longer, though.
About 1 in every 100 Cairo cab drivers is a nightmare, but about 4 in every 100 are gems. Tonight was a gem: young guy, fun, lively, wanting my opinions on everything– always smiling and joking, and passionately denouncing the futility of war. He gave me a Twinkie to take on the flight (switching to English long enough to tell me: “Cake! Cake!”). He liked the music playing from a car near us, drove up alongside and asked them what it was, and then had me reach over to the other car while both of us were moving at top speed and take a copy of the CD.
