nice aerial photo
November 20, 2009
I was looking for a photo on the web to explain the geography, and found a great one on the AUC website.
This is our island. At bottom left is the northern tip of the island (there’s a beautiful café there).
Note the three bridges on the left-hand side. From closest to furthest, they are called: 1. 26th of July, 2. 6th of October, and 3. Qasr al-Nil.
If you take bridge #3 to the left, you are downtown. If you observe the diagonal street running to the right from bridge #1, that is 26th of July Street, the main artery of Zamalek. My building, and the Algerian Embassy, are located about 3 blocks toward the viewer from 26th of July Street, and about 2 blocks in from the Nile (the larger branch to the left of the photo).
The Pyramids are about a 15-minute drive to the right (you can easily see them if you’re on the top floor of a building in Zamalek, unless the smog is really bad on a given day). The AUC new campus is about a 45-minute drive to the left.
