Egypt-Algeria showdown coming

November 18, 2009

The streets are already crazy in Cairo. Makeshift drum corps are marching down the streets. Cars are honking just for the sake of honking.

One of the two countries is going to be very disappointed tonight, which I regret.

Which is not to say that I’m neutral:

“Misr! Misr! Misr!”

Misr is the Arabic name for Egypt, incidentally, and it’s pronounced sort of like “moss” in English, followed by a sound resembling the “-re” in “Sartre”. “Egypt” is, of course, a descendant of the Greek name for the place, Aigyptos.
