Egypt 2 : 0 Algeria in thriller
November 14, 2009
Amr Zaki had a very early goal for Egypt, and we were feeling confident. But then they couldn’t get much else going, and I and most others had given up. But deep in second half injury time, Egypt scored on a header off a crossing pass, and Cairo erupted in celebration.
Egypt and Algeria end up perfectly tied in the group, and need a playoff to see who advances to the World Cup. If memory serves, it will be this Wednesday in Sudan.
There are so many police with shields in front of my place right now. No one is even going to get close to the Algerian Embassy. But I guess I have a few more days of round-the-clock honking to look forward to.
Here’s a glimpse down the street, away from the Embassy. And yes, those are flames in the street, from the makeshift bugspray torches.
