no Gibbon for awhile
October 9, 2009
I’ve been stalled on Gibbon for awhile. Why? Because I don’t have much time to read these days, just little flashes of a few minutes at a time. And reading of that sort is easiest to do when it’s exciting narrative material of the sort that you can’t bring yourself to put down. You can bleary-eyed and already in bed, and still want to read 10 more pages on Attila the Hun.
That’s not true, however, of Justinian’s legal reforms. They’re perfectly interesting and important, but they take up a long chapter of Gibbon, and they demand full concentration at a time of peak mental energy. And it might be awhile before I have reading time of that sort available again.
