100 miles

September 23, 2009

Many of you probably knew this, but I had no idea until tonight that there is such a thing as 100-mile footraces. It’s hard to believe.

Here’s just ONE EXAMPLE of such a race.

THE WINNING TIMES ARE HERE, led by a 33-year-old who did it in eighteen and a half hours. My hat’s off to him. And it wasn’t just the “100 miles” part that amazes me, but the elevations and rugged trail that are involved.

That’s the equivalent of almost four marathons in a row, with “a cumulative elevation gain of approximately 26,882 feet, as well as a cumulative loss of approximately 26,131 feet throughout the course.” It’s almost absurd, isn’t it? In 18.5 hours? If the guy had started running when I woke up this morning, he’d be at the finish line by now.

I can safely say: these people are way, way out of my league. There is no chance that I will ever participate in a 100-mile footrace on any terrain, let alone this one.
