on hotel rooms

September 6, 2009

It’s been 6 days and 5 nights in this room, and it takes a lot less time than that to feel domestically attached to a room. You adjust your daily routine to its strengths and weaknesses, and master the various neighborhood shops and shortcuts pretty quickly.

And then it’s all gone, like smoke or steam. Sometimes I can’t even remember where I was staying in a given city when I reminisce about the trip. And if in the future you return to the city and happen to walk past where you previously stayed, it usually feels not the least bit welcoming.

I’d feel perfectly well-suited to a life like this, though. I mean I wouldn’t mind being nothing but a permanent guest lecturer, moving on every week or two.
