another reason why STS is better than philosophy
September 3, 2009
One of the several advantages that STS (Science, Technology, and Society) has over Philosophy is that it’s an immeasurably more gender-balanced field than Philosophy at present. And along with the moral and intellectual benefits derivable therefrom, it means that the dance parties are infinitely better. It is undeniable that the typical female is a 5 times better dancer than a typical (straight) male. Good party, in any case.
That was preceded by a three-way debate between me, John Law, and Peter Gratton.
Back to the dance part… The music was OK, though with the age group of the conference it was pitched more in a “nostagia” mood than I would have preferred, since i belong more to the “musical youth” than most people my age. I have not yet grown up enough to want nostalgia yet.
The DJ randomly played “Beat It,” which appalled me only because “Billie Jean” is obviously the far superior song. So I walked up and requested it, and he played it on the very next song, fastest request service ever. And if you haven’t taken my advice and listened to Billie Jean lately, it’s a masterpiece. Listen to it very closely on a high enough volume to hear what’s going on musically. There may be *no* better example of the studio mixing art.
I was going to say something else, but completely forgot what. Maybe it will come to me tomorrow.
