frequent flyer

September 1, 2009

Maybe some of you have noticed this too: airlines becoming draconian about erasing frequent flyer miles. I get put on lots of different airlines and belong to most of them; American and Delta both erased me without warning. But Northwest still lets me keep the whole pile, even though Delta owns them now, and of course with Northwest I have KLM rights, and they go everywhere.

It’s only 25,000 miles to get a free ticket from Africa to the Indian subcontinent. The sad part is being unable to find a time to do it. I also have enough miles for Cairo to Honolulu, or Cairo to Costa Rica.

My best free ticket was Chicago to Rio de Janeiro, followed by Chicago to Anchorage. I never did one out of Cairo, though supposedly I can go anywhere within Africa on Kenya Airways through Nairobi (a KLM/Northwest partner). But while one friend went from Egypt to Sierra Leone in this manner, another friend claims he got the runaround treatment from the Kenyans on the free ticket.

But it’s moot unless I can find a block of free time.
