Meillassoux: Philosophy in the Making
August 17, 2009
That will be the title of my other book, just approved by Edinburgh University Press. The delivery date is October 2010, and then however long after that it takes to get it into print– presumably Spring 2011.
This wasn’t on my list of planned projects, but the opportunity arose, and since opportunities often belong only to a fleeting moment it is good to seize them.
It will be a sizable study of Meillassoux’s published and unpublished writings so far. You’ll not only get a fairly thorough treatment of L’inexistence divine, but even an appendix with a number of key selections from that work, in the manner of Badiou’s Deleuze book. At the suggestion of one of the referees there will also be an interview contained in the volume.
The Philosophy in the Making subtitle will be recognized by some of you for its notably Latourian flavor– Latour often calls for a study of “science in the making” as opposed to finished, ready-made science. But it won’t be an ANT-ish study of Meillassoux (such a thing would require the sort of biographical detail that we generally have only for the deceased). The title merely refers to the fact that it’s still a bit early to know what Meillassoux’s finished philosophy will look like; he’s still pretty young, after all. But with the published and unpublished materials both considered, there is the chance of getting a much better sense of his trajectory than is currently available to the public.
