The usual assumption is that it was Medieval Christianity that was tormented by superstition, as opposed to the more enlightened ancient world. But read a few chapters of pretty much any Greek or Roman historian, and you’ll find yourself adrift in a sea of omens. Gibbon:

“Places struck with lightning were surrounded with a wall; things were buried with mysterious ceremony.”
