philosophical myths
April 18, 2009
It’s unfortunate that the myth is largely a dead art form in philosophy, since a good myth has a lot of staying power. Plato’s cave is obviously the most influential of them all. How many others? Not enough of them, though you might be able to come up with a half dozen good ones aside from the cave.
I wonder what would happen if, instead of requiring a Ph.D. thesis, we required prospective initiates in the field to come up with a good, memorable myth to demonstrate their central philosophical idea. It would be a lot harder than writing a 300-page thesis, I think.
