one irony about quicksand
April 11, 2009
Ironically, it was just about at the time when we were drawing up the original “concepts of children” list, and mocking quicksand in passing as a ridiculous and rare entity, that former President George Bush (the elder) nearly died in quicksand.
This is not a well-known incident; in fact, I can’t even find it on Google. But I remember it clearly from the newspapers of around 1993. Bush Sr. was on some sort of hunting trip in Canada. He stepped in what was technically called a “peat bog,” described as very similar to quicksand. Two Secret Service agents had to pull with all their might to yank him out. (They’d have had a fun time explaining that incident to their Chief. Losing a former President to quicksand? Surely a career-ending moment in the Secret Service.)
