flight coming

April 10, 2009

This isn’t likely to be one of my more enjoyable flying days, with some throat/ear issues still lingering. But traffic should be light to the airport on a Friday morning (already the weekend here). There’s also no problem finding a taxi now that I’m back in Zamalek, with hundreds going by every hour (hundreds per minute at peak times). That’s a nice contrast with El Rehab, where I had a devil of a time getting a taxi for all three of those November trips.

Other than a handful of new yellow taxis, Cairo cabs do not have meters. You just have to know the right approximate fare for where you’re going. Once in awhile that leads to an argument with the driver. I tend to pay on the generous side, so fights are rare. But I’ve had a few; everyone has.

The airport is improving. For a long time it was much less nice than the airports of Beirut and Damascus, but they’re getting it there. Supposedly they are also building an extension of the Metro to go out there, but the taxi ride is not so bad in the first place.
